1898-1908 Stockholm
A dignified exile, the Sultan had grown tired of Cherif political activities and could no longer tolerate his presence in the capital Constantinople, so a solution was found that was acceptable to the Sultan and Cherifs father Said who still carried the Sultans favour, had it been some other expendable officials son, he wouldn’t have tolerated such activities and had him locked away and thrown away the key as he had done with so many other young liberal minded Ottomans. As luck would have it the Swedish representative to the Ottoman Empire had for some time been asking for the Sultan to reopen their representation in Stockholm, Sweden was perfect Cherif would be far away from Constantinople and Paris which was the capital of Ottoman dissent. Cherif was nominated for the post and the King naturally approved of the choice, much less able and qualified figures had been given much more prestigious diplomatic posts.
But as we will learn over time, Cherif never went quietly and he always managed to create an opportunity out of unfavourable circumstances, what was supposed to be a post that would mean him going into obscurity ended with him becoming a even more well known, he created a network of useful contacts, he became a friend to the King, and as we will find out later he helped financed the liberal opposition in the Ottoman Empire.
