Cherif had for years been secretly funding opposition to the Sultan during his time in Stockholm, perhaps even earlier. So when the Sultan was deposed Cherif went back to Constantinople and became head of a CUP branch, but very quickly he fell out with other leading figures on a number of issues, he publicly resigned and had to leave Constantinople before he was arrested or worse. His second exile was underway, he settled in Paris and began his political campaign against the CUP.
