The Handan family came from Slemani, originally called the Ali-Handan, this family originates from a love affair between a man called Ali and a lady called Handan, Ali was refused Handan’s hand in marriage on the grounds he was from an inferior tribe, the couple decided to run away together and start their own family. Those who come from this family in Ottoman archives are recorded as Handanzade.
